You win some (Beau Pribula), you lose some (Braggin’ Rights)

The Morning Commute for December 23, 2024.

Welcome to the Morning Commute

Today we’re talking about winning and losing. Pretty standard stuff, you know?

On Sunday night, Mizzou “won” a big competition that had been heating up over the past few weeks.

Beau Pribula, former Penn State backup QB, has been the the subject of headlines after he transferred prior to his team’s College Football Playoff game. He was open about the struggles of making that decision, but ultimately felt like it was in his best interest to take advantage of the market that had opened up. He had a lot of suitors, including Indiana, Ole Miss, and Mizzou’s upcoming bowl opponent Iowa, but he’ll ultimately spend his final two years in Columbia. It’s a nice addition for the Tigers, who now seem to have the QB position sorted for the next half decade at least.

Unfortunately, Sunday wasn’t all about winning, as you’ll no doubt be aware after Mizzou’s 80-77 Braggin’ Rights loss. Mizzou fought to get back into the game multiple times, yet couldn’t maintain a very brief lead within the final 10 minutes, and ultimately conceded the game on a few missed threes with time running out.

As much as any loss to Illinois can be “good,” it was an encouraging outing for the Tigers, who played a close game against a very good team, despite the fact that they struggled in several areas and are still missing Caleb Grill. They’ll more than likely wrap up non-conference play with only two losses — one on the road and one on neutral court to two likely tournament teams — as well as a win against a protected seed. It’s a strong position to be in heading into SEC play, where they’ll need a few signature wins to keep their Tournament hopes alive.

There have been a lot of good Tiger teams to play in the modern era, some before some of the guys on this roster were born. Most of them didn’t get to brag about beating Illinois and kansas. The only one that did? They were one of the best teams to ever walk the halls of Mizzou Arena, anomaly in the NCAA Tournament notwithstanding.

Hmmph!

“We didn’t hold the lead for a period of time of time that I thought would have stressed Illinois out a little more,” Gates said. “To only have six minutes of (the) lead in that game, that’s a tough position to be in.”

I’m tired of thinking about this!

In two season’s as Allar’s backup, Pribula flashed high potential. He completed 37 of 56 pass attempts for 424 yards and nine touchdowns with just one interception. However, arguably his biggest strength is is mobility, as he also ran for 571 yards and 10 touchdowns. Penn State would often use him sporadically in QB run packages, and he would often capitalize.

I like the bit about him scoring lots of touchdowns.

Weselman spent the past four years at Stanford, where he mostly served as a holder on placekicks. He saw extended time as punter in 2023, averaging 42.2 yards per kick, with a seven 50+ yarders and a long of 59 yards.

Volleyball season may be over, but portal season is here, and Dawn & Co. have wasted no time in bringing in a ringer in Big West Player of the Year Caylen Alexander from Hawaii. Per Matthew, her 5.09 kills per set were ranked fifth in the nation and her 5.64 points per set ranked seventh. Oh, and she’s good on defense.

Some great stuff here about Mizzou’s newest volleyball superstar and the Olympic sports.
