Mizzou adds a young, experienced left tackle to seemingly complete its offensive line work for the offseason.
It’s been a (blessedly) quiet week in transfer portal news with the holiday and bowl season kicking into top gear. But this is a part of the game that never truly slows down, even for holiday weekends.
After visiting Mizzou’s campus on Christmas Eve, redshirt freshman OL transfer Johnny Williams IV committed to Missouri on Saturday afternoon.
Williams comes to the Tigers by way of West Virginia, the second former Mountaineer to join the program this offseason. He follows true freshman Josiah Trotter as another addition in the transfer class of 2025.
We’ll get more into this in the upcoming recruiting reset, but Williams’ addition, while certainly welcome because of the need for OL depth, is an eyebrow raiser. For one thing, the recruiting consensus seems to be a bit split on him as a player. Evaluations range from 247 Sports, which doesn’t have him rated in their portal list, to Rivals, which rates him as a four-star transfer recruit. On3 is more middling, listing him as the 151st best player in the portal.
More pertinent to Mizzou, however, is the position that Williams plays. He solely played left tackle for West Virginia, becoming the team’s main contributor at that position by year’s end. He was pretty damn good too, grading out as one of West Virginia’s best linemen and pass blockers. Mizzou is in need of a left tackle after the departure of Marcus Bryant, but it’s a position that a lot of people thought might go to Cayden Green. Assuming Williams is coming as a presumed starter, that means Green will stay at left guard… unless other changes are in order.
Either way, snagging a talented rising sophomore a nice way to round out a trio of offensive line additions that started with veterans like Dominick Giudice and Keagen Trost.
