Vegas, Baby, Vegas!

What does it all mean, Basil?

Week #11 opening lines have been hung, so in this space we take a look at what the oddsmakers are laying down around the SEC and a few other games of interest.

With that, as always, if you’re going to dabble, please do so responsibly. Don’t forget, any line that seems too good to be true likely is, and the sharps in Vegas know what they’re doing.

Here’s a look at the SEC opening lines and a few other thoughts, with all lines courtesy of FanDuel Sportsbook, who is an SBNation partner. All odds are subject to adjust during the week, and all kick times listed are central. TV provider listed in parentheses. The Nuggets of Wisdom (NoW) are free of charge, so you’re getting what you paid for there!

What are some of your favorite plays this week? Leave them in the comments section below and we’ll compare notes.

Saturday, Nov. 9th

11 am (ABC) – Florida at Texas (-20.5 / 49.5 total)

NoW – Longhorns are coming off a bye week, while Florida gave Georgia a good run before falling by two TDs last week. Florida was leading the Bulldogs until their QB D.J. Lagway went out with an apparent hamstring injury, and it was zero offense for the Gators after that. If Lagway can’t play in Austin, then the Longhorns seem a good pick here…

2:30 pm (ABC) – Georgia at Ole Miss (+2.5 / 56.5 total)

NoW – Ole Miss will certainly let it rip as they have to win this one for a chance at the playoffs most likely. Georgia is the better team generally, and they showed they can handle a rowdy road environment when they drummed Texas a few weeks ago, so you’re saying I can play the better team and give less than a field goal? Sign me up…

3:15 pm (SECN) – South Carolina at Vanderbilt (+3.5 / 46.5 total)

NoW – Wow, if I’m Carolina here I’m bummed that the oddsmakers made me the favorite because this is great motivation for a ranked Vandy team at home. You know they’ll throw the “disrespect” card out all week long in Nashville. Vandy excels at close games so I think this one is tight and I see the Commodores pulling it out….

6 pm (ESPN) – Mississippi State at Tennessee (-23.5 / 60.6 total)

NoW – Tennessee’s offense has scored 28, 24, 23 (in OT), 14 and 25 in its five SEC games this season. Hard to imagine they’ll score enough – even against lowly Mississippi State – to feel good about having to cover 23.5 points here. On the other hand, State has allowed 58, 34, 41, 35 and 45 in its five SEC games. The Vols are at Georgia the following week so maybe this is a lookahead spot?…

6:30 pm (ABC) – Alabama at LSU (+2.5 / 57.5 total)

NoW – I’m a little surprised at this initial line, considering ‘Bama has played two SEC road games so far and lost them both. Conversely, LSU has played only one SEC home game thus far, but they downed Ole Miss 29-26 a few weeks ago. Night game in Red Stick? Give me Tigers!…

6:45 pm (SECN) – Oklahoma at Mizzou (-2.5 / 43.5 total)

NoW – Yuck, the only thing I’d consider on this one is loading up on the under. Two under-performing offenses with QB questions – along with two over-performing defenses. Frankly I’m surprised this total got into the 40s, I expect to see it trend lower during the week. Remember when it was cool to make fun of Iowa games that were low-scoring? Don’t be surprised to see a 9-6 type of game in this one…

Non-SEC games of interest

Saturday, Nov. 9th

Hard to believe but there aren’t any compelling matchups that I see in non-SEC games this week, so I won’t insult your intelligence by pretending that was the case. Enjoy the SEC slate and have a great Saturday!
