Vegas, Baby, Vegas!
Taking a look inside the numbers
Week #10 opening lines have been hung, so in this space we take a look at what the oddsmakers are laying down around the SEC and a few other games of interest.
With that, as always, if you’re going to dabble, please do so responsibly. Don’t forget, any line that seems too good to be true likely is, and the sharps in Vegas know what they’re doing.
Here’s a look at the SEC opening lines and a few other thoughts, with all lines courtesy of FanDuel Sportsbook, who is an SBNation partner. All odds are subject to adjust during the week, and all kick times listed are central. TV provider listed in parentheses. The Nuggets of Wisdom (NoW) are free of charge, so you’re getting what you paid for there!
What are some of your favorite plays this week? Leave them in the comments section below and we’ll compare notes.
Saturday, Nov. 2nd
11 am (ESPN) – Ole Miss at Arkansas (+6.5 / 57.5 total)
NoW – Two teams here that are a hard to get a handle on. Ole Miss has to win out to have a chance at the playoff, yet their two losses are only by a field goal each. Arkansas has the best win between these two, with their week 6 win over Tennessee. I’d think about backing the ‘Hogs here, but only if you could get 7 or more…
11:45 am (SECN) – Vanderbilt at Auburn (-6.5 / 48.5 total)
NoW – Not sure I’m understanding how Auburn is favored by nearly a TD here. Taking Vandy and the points seems like a no-brainer, which is why I’d be too scared to do it…
1:30 pm (SECN-Plus) – Maine at Oklahoma (No line posted)
NoW – Ewww, pass…
2:30 pm (ABC) – Florida vs Georgia (-16.5 / 52.5 total)
NoW – World’s largest cocktail party shouldn’t be much of a party in the end for those wearing blue and orange. But, the Gators have shown signs of life with wins in three of their last four games…
3:15 pm (SECN) – UMass at Mississippi State (-17.5 / 58.5 total)
NoW – UMass’ SEC tour continues, and will wrap up on Nov. 23rd with a game against Georgia. Bulldogs are 1-7 and already eliminated from bowl contention…
6:30 pm (ABC) – Texas A&M at South Carolina (+3.5 / 46.5 total)
NoW – Aggies stormed back for a statement win last week over LSU to sit as the only unbeaten team in SEC play. They’ll be tested here by an up-and-down Carolina team coming off a bye. Small margin here indicates Vegas thinks this one is virtually a toss-up…
6:45 pm (SECN) – Kentucky at Tennessee (-15.5 / 44.5 total)
NoW – Hard to imagine Kentucky keeping this one very close, while the Vols are coming off a bye after their upset win over Alabama…
Non-SEC games of interest
Saturday, Nov. 2nd
11 am (FOX) – Ohio State at Penn State (+3.5 / 47.5 total)
NoW – Penn State is undefeated but their resume just isn’t that impressive, and the oddsmakers agree by installing Ohio State as the road favorite. OSU’s only blemish was a last-second loss at #1 Oregon. The Buckeyes were lucky to beat a meh Nebraska team last Saturday, so we’ll see who comes to play in this one…
11:00 am (ESPN) – Duke at Miami, Fla. (-20.5 / 56.5 total)
NoW – The hope for seeing Miami step on a rake continues, this time with a surprise Duke team that comes in at 6-2 overall. So you’re saying there’s a chance? With a 3-TD spread, oddsmakers aren’t thinking so…
6:30 pm (ESPN) – Louisville at Clemson (11.5 / 61.5 total)
NoW – Clemson seems to be fully recovered from their brutal opening loss against Georgia. Louisville has three losses, but they’re all by one score so perhaps the Cardinals can make a game of this one?…
7:00 pm (ACC) – Pitt at SMU (-7.5 / 60.5 total)
NoW – Undefeated Pitt (7-0) at 7-1 SMU, who would have thought this would be one of the highlight games of week #10 before the season started? Books don’t seem to think Pitt is legit with this line being more than a TD. Shame it’s on the ACC Network and won’t be seen by hardly anyone…
