What Eli Drinkwitz, Brian Early and Zion Young had to say at “Taste of the Tigers”.

Per annual tradition, “Tiger Talk” moved its location from Bud’s Classic BBQ to the Walsworth Family Columns Club at Faurot Field for “Taste of the Tigers”.

The event is hosted by The Food Bank for Central & Northeast Missouri. It gives attendees an opportunity to sample different mid-Missouri eats as well as local brews and wines. There’s also a silent auction, where attendees can enter to win items like memorabilia, vacations and other expensive items.

Here’s what Eli Drinkwitz, Brian Early and Zion Young told Mike Kelly at the event:

Eli Drinkwitz | Head coach

  • No matter what, we’re gonna find a way to win
  • I can’t wait until next year when we play Kansas
  • In regards to playing Oklahoma for the first time since 2011, love to have a rivalry renewed
  • In regards to Theo Wease Jr.’s toe-tap touchdow, I don’t know if anybody else would be able to do that
  • Mike lost track of how many times he said “to the house!” (it was three) on Zion Young’s game-winning fumble return touchdown (I asked him after the show’s conclusion if he’d ever pulled off a triple “to the house!” before; he said he couldn’t recall).
  • Drinkwitz began recounting all of the awesome plays that’ve happened in the north end zone recently, like the game-winning field goals by Harrison Mevis against Arkansas in 2020 and Kansas State in 2023 and the Florida two-point conversion in 2021. Drinkwitz proclaimed “the north end zone’s back!”.
  • Against OU, Drinkwitz realized that they had turn the offense loose a little bit after playing conservatively in the first half
  • Zion Young flipped from Mizzou to Michigan State on signing day two years ago. Florida State was making a push for Young in the portal when he entered.

Brian Early | Defensive line/edge coach

  • On Young’s fumble return, Early said that Young is a lot faster than what he showed
  • Confirmed that Joe Moore III had surgery on Friday
  • Johnny Walker Jr. does everything the right way. There’s nobody that works harder.

Zion Young | Defensive end

  • When he was in the transfer portal, he was looking for a defense that fit him. Liked what he saw at Mizzou.
  • Before the fumble return, Early asked him if he needed a sub, he said no and stayed in the game, which ended up working out
  • He couldn’t believe that Jackson Arnold fumbled. Said it felt like it dropped out of the sky.
  • Coach Early is a gritty guy. Young feeds off of him.
  • He feels like he earned his respect throughout the team during spring camp
