The backup QB and WR2 combo led Mizzou’s offense while a familiar defender turned in another excellent performance.

Welcome to the MV3, a weekly piece where Rock M Nation’s staff votes on the three most impactful players in Mizzou’s previous game.

1. Drew Pyne

You won’t win any awards for going 14-for-27 in the passing game, only hitting 143 yards and averaging 5.3 yards per attempt. But Drew Pyne is winning this award specifically for more than just his numbers on the stat sheet.

Pyne has received hell from the fan base over the past few weeks, which both is and isn’t fair. He hasn’t played well, so it’s right to question whether or not Mizzou could do better. That being said, he came to the Tigers specifically to back up Brady Cook, a job he’s had to adapt to quickly over the past few weeks. It shouldn’t surprise us that the offense would struggle under him as opposed to Cook.

But after a brutal first half that saw Pyne only throw for 26 yards, the fifth-year senior took off for his best game in a few years. Pyne went for 117 yards and three scores in the second half, including a perfect fade to the back of the end zone that Theo Wease high-pointed for the tying score. Not only that, Pyne had a few massive scrambles for first downs that kept key drives alive toward the end of the game. It was an awfully gutsy performance for a guy who hasn’t had the warmest welcome to Columbia.

2. Theo Wease, Jr.

In a just world, Theo Wease wins this award. That’s right, I said it — I voted for Wease at number one. How else do you celebrate a 70-yard, two-touchdown performance against your former club? I don’t think there’s a ton of bad blood between TWJ and the Sooners, but it’s clear that the game meant a lot to him. In response, he turned in his best effort of the 2024 season. That touchdown in the NEZ at the end of the game might have exorcised a few demons.

3. Daylan Carnell

Another Saturday, another excellent game for Daylan Carnell. The junior safety had five tackles, two forced fumbles, a pass breakup, and was Mizzou’s highest rated rush and pass defender according to Pro Football Focus. Take a good look while you can, the Indianapolis native may be playing on Sunday’s soon.

Others receiving votes: Corey Flagg, Jr., Triston Newson, Zion Young
