Prepare to have Darude’s Sandstorm blasted into your brain for 4 hours.
Beat your peers. Is that a saying?
I don’t think I’m going against the grain here in admitting the Missouri football program isn’t a blue blood in college football. Neither is South Carolina. Both programs, over the years, have had great moments and great seasons. But the only path to having a great season is by beating your peers. You have to beat the non-elite programs in your conference. Those games include Kentucky, Vanderbilt, and yes, South Carolina.
If you look at the structure of the old SEC East, all Mizzou had to do to be bowl eligible was to win 3 of their 4 non-conference games, and beat the three above teams. Since joining the SEC in 2012, Missouri has been bowl eligible in 9 seasons (and technically 10 since 5 win teams could be eligible in 2020).
You can almost draw a direct corelation between beating these three teams, and having a good season:
- 20212: 5-7 — 1-2
- 2013: 12-2 — 2-1
- 2014: 11-3 — 3-0
- 2015: 5-7 — 1-2
- 2016: 4-8 — 1-2
- 2017: 7-6 — 1-2
- 2018: 8-5 — 1-2
- 2019: 6-6 — 1-2
- 2020: 5-5 — 3-0
- 2021: 6-7 — 2-1
- 2022: 6-7 — 2-1
- 2023: 11-2 — 3-0
One of the things Eli Drinkwitz has done is recognize the importance of beating those three teams. Kentucky isn’t on the schedule this year, but Drink is undefeated against South Carolina and Vanderbilt, and he’s 2-2 against Mark Stoops. Missouri has won five in a row against South Carolina, including the last three against Shane Beamer. Let’s not ruin that streak now, ok?
