An old rivalry renewed.
As much as Oklahoma fans refuse to admit it, Missouri and OU are rivals.
In the loosest sense it’s accurate. In the way anyone you’re in the same conference with is a rival. And sure Mizzou and OU aren’t rivals the way the Tigers and kU are, or the Sooners and Texas Longhorns are. But they are more than just conference mates.
For the longest time this was a no contest rivalry. Mizzou has only beaten Oklahoma 24 times which stands to give the Sooners a 73.6% win rate over the Tigers. Only 8 of those wins have happened since 1946. Mizzou is 8-58-1, or 11.9%.
But the 2010 win was just two games ago! And the state of College Football has changed a LOT in the last few years, including the Sooners. From 2000 to 2021 Oklahoma had just four seasons where they won fewer than 10 games in a season, and none of those years saw fewer than 8 wins. But since Lincoln Riley left for USC things in Norman have gotten a bit sticky. Brent Venables has taken over and in year one he went 6-7. Their lowest win total since 5-6 got John Blake fired in 1998. Venables rebounded to win 10 games last year but this season they’re just 5-4 in year one of SEC play.
Notably, the competition has gotten much stiffer than the days of the Big 12. The SEC is a tough tough league to be good year in and year out in. And while OU was a team with deep pockets in the Big 12, Missouri soon discovered the pockets are far deeper in the SEC.
I’ve no idea what will happen with this game but I certainly wouldn’t hate Mizzou dropping OU to 5-5 and continue their bumpy entry to SEC play.
