The Morning Commute for Tuesday, November 12
Welcome to the Morning Commute
Today we’re talking about Mizzou Football, Volleyball, and Hoops
Following Missouri’s 30-23 win over Oklahoma on Saturday night, Mizzou linebacker Triston Newson received a well-deserved honor on Monday as he was named SEC Co-Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced.

Newson came up huge with 10 total tackles (2.5 TFLs) 1 sack, and a forced fumble in the win. Newson joins Blake Craig and Nate Noel to win players of the week award so far this season.
Looking ahead, Mizzou Football’s November 23rd game at Mississippi State has been set for a 3:15 p.m. CT kick-off on SEC Network.

That’s Missouri’s last road game of the season as the Tigers are still looking for their first SEC road win.
After their nine-game winning streak, Mizzou Volleyball is finally ranked — coming in at No. 25 (and 17th in the latest RPI).

#Mizzou Volleyball has moved all the way up to 17th in the RPI from 22nd after going 2-0 this week. As a reminder, the top 16 teams as ranked *by the committee* host the opening weekend matches, something which seems more and more realistic for this team.@RockMNation pic.twitter.com/lYYTLYczTv

And while there’s still a lot of concerns about this basketball team, the Tigers improved to 2-1 on the season with a career high 33 points from Caleb Grill.

“The Mayors Cup has always been more of a matter of pride than anything else. This year, it might mean something a bit extra. Could the Gamecocks leapfrog the Tigers for bowl preference if they win? Could the Tigers use a win at Williams-Brice as a signature piece to show the committee?”
There’s a lot on the line for both teams on Saturday in the other Columbia.
“It was an awfully gutsy performance for a guy who hasn’t had the warmest welcome to Columbia.”
Mizzou’s backup QB Drew Pyne tops the list of our latest MV3 after a 30-23 win over Oklahoma.
“I think this Missouri team is going to have a bad taste in their mouth of how the second halves have went against both Memphis and Howard and are going to turn in their first clean second half performance of the season.”
This, unfortunately, didn’t happen. But a win is a win.
“Yet again, Eli Drinkwitz has built a resilient team of young men that trust, love, and fight for one another, and yet again, they earned the right to celebrate another tight victory.”
The team chemistry is strong on this Mizzou Football team.
“Mizzou has won nine-straight one-score games under Drinkwitz, dating back to a 21-17 loss against Kentucky in 2022. And that has to count for something, right?”
Mizzou Football is coming up clutch under Eli Drinkwitz in close games.
“What a weekend it was for Missouri sports! In the 97th meeting of Missouri and Oklahoma on the gridiron Saturday, MU won in a wild game which saw five fumbles, two scoop-and-scores, and, per the St. Louis P-D, 28 points scored in the final 200 seconds.
Also, volleyball beat Georgia to stay one of the hottest teams in the SEC, men’s basketball won their season opener against Howard, and women’s hoops split two games against mid-majors. That’s way too much for just ten pictures.
The Tobias Ten became the Tobias Sixteen this weekend!
“The win doesn’t exactly inspire a lot for the Missouri fanbase, as the Eagles were in the game with just under a minute to play and the Tigers played yet another unclean second half. They were outplayed in facets that they shouldn’t have been outplayed in, but escaped thanks to their depth which is an advantage they won’t have later in the season against power-conference foes.”
