The Morning Commute for Friday, October 25th, 2024.

Welcome to the Morning Commute

Today we’re talking about injury reports. There’s been near non-stop discussion around Brady Cook’s availability in virtually every space where Mizzou Football discussion is taking place. Specifically if he will or won’t play. Virtually everyone seems to think he’s going to play, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he does. We’ve seen before the state with which Brady is willing to take the field.

You know who won’t play? Mookie Cooper!

Cooper missing the game certainly stinks. He’s been really good with only a couple drops on the year and he’s been on the field more than anyone at Wide Receiver with the lone exception of Theo Wease, and for what he’s been through I was hoping he could have finished the long run after the catch against Auburn last week. But he’ll be out against Alabama, so the next man up will be Mekhi Miller, Joshua Manning, and Daniel Blood.

The next big question will be answered tomorrow when we see if Brady can go or not.

Yesterday at Rock M and Rock M+

Dan was back with a new Between the Numbers column:

Missouri has also played some uneven football, but they enter this week coming off the high of a miracle win. As two-touchdown underdogs, Eli Drinkwitz’s ballclub does have an inside straight chance to pull off the upset. It is unlikely, but not impossible; Bill Connelly’s SP+ gives Alabama a 70% chance at winning. Parker Fleming’s EPA model, 74%. The Vegas moneyline (Alabama -550) says 84%.

The odds aren’t in their favor for sure, but Dan has a few ways the Tigers can find a way to spring the upset.

Quentin insists he sees shades of 2008 in the trip to Tuscaloosa:

With over half of the 2024 campaign in the rearview mirror, MU’s season trajectory feels awfully similar to what it was 16 years ago. In 2008, the Tigers entered the season ranked No. 6 in the AP poll fresh off of a historic 2007 season where they went 12-2 with a Cotton Bowl victory. They started 5-0, moving up to No. 3 in the nation before a battle with No. 17 Oklahoma State.

BACK ON THE BUBBLE BABY!

Missouri: Can Mizzou take advantage of a “vulnerable” and “beatable” Alabama team? The Tigers’ College Football Playoff hopes are on the line on Saturday in Tuscaloosa.

I’m not convinced their hopes are on the line on saturday, but if they get blown out any hopes are likely dashed. If you lose a close one, you will need help to get in but the path still exists. Sammy also had a Q&A with Roll Bama Roll which is worth checking out.

Mizzou Soccer was at Texas last night, Dylan has the preview for that game and the sunday night regular season finale against LSU, here’s the playoff scenario heading into the last week:

In order to secure their spot, Mizzou will likely need 2+ points to close the season— two ties or a win.

SEC Hoops Preview: the Kentucky Wildcats:

So now Cal is in Fayetteville, and the ’Cats turned to Mark Pope. That they did so after being turned down by Scott Drew, Dan Hurley, and possibly others is just a reminder of how much college athletics has changed. A decade ago, every coach outside of the head coaches at Duke, North Carolina, and Kansas would have lept for the chance to coach hoops in Lexington. Now? Kentucky turns to an alum without a single NCAA Tournament win on his resume.

It’s been a while since we’ve ranked Kentucky this low in the preseason.

Over at Rock M+, we’re talking about Baseball Commitments with FAMOUS siblings, and Matt Harris put together a big primer on the 2026 Hoops recruiting class.

On paper, MU is only set to lose Aidan Shaw and Mark Mitchell at the end of 2025-26, creating two scholarship slots. But in the era of the portal and NIL, that’s a very loose projection. It’s been reinforced to me multiple times that MU’s base template is taking two or three high-school prospects each cycle.

He’s also got an update on where things stand with the few remaining 2025 targets, and DataMizzou compared his PAR rankings list to the SEC players on CBS’s 101 best players in the country list. It’s… different.
