The Morning Commute for Friday November 15th, 2024.
Welcome to the Morning Commute
Did you see last nights game?
I wouldn’t blame anyone for not watching, Mizzou played the worst team in Division 1 basketball last night. Before the game the Tigers were a 30 point favorite in the analytics sites and a 35 point favorite on the betting markets. They had a 32 point lead at half time and then rattled off a 15 point run to start the 2nd half to push the lead to 47. And it would NOT get better for Mississippi Valley State.
Missouri has beaten 16 opponents by 50 points or more over the years, 11 of those since 2000. 5 of those belong to Mike Anderson, two of those were actually Kim Anderson wins. But this is Dennis Gates first 50 point win, and not only that but this is only one of two such 70 point or more wins in school history. The other being (also) a 72 point win in 1995 over Chicago State.
It can’t be fun being a basketball player for MVSU, traveling all over the country getting your brains beat in on a regular basis. As often as the Delta Devils get blown out, this was the third worst loss for them in program history. In 2019 they lost to Utah by NINETY FOUR points, and in 2020 they lost at Arkansas by 80. I counted a total of 48 losses by 40 points or more going back as far as 1987, and 143 losses by 30 points or more. Just in the last 10 years there are 79 losses by 30 points or more, 29 by 40 or more, and yes 14 games by 50 or more.
Really, what are we doing?
It’s all good fun for the Tigers. There’s the benefit of getting to play a lot of guys who may not play much in the heat of battle, but it just doesn’t seem worth it. Division 1 basketball really should be cut in half.
Yesterday at Rock M and Rock M+
- We’re BACK with another Between the Numbers post from Dan:
Whichever Missouri player is under center is also going to be under siege. South Carolina has an outstanding defensive line, specifically two nuclear torpedos coming off the edge. True freshman five-star recruit Dylan Stewart and fifth-year graduate transfer Kyle Kennard have been feasting on quarterbacks all season. They rank third and eighth in PFF’s pass rush grading respectively, of players with at least 150 snaps on the season.
Run the danged ball?
- Quentin wrote an excellent piece on the new version of D-Line Zou:
On the other side of the defensive line is Johnny Walker Jr., who was stepping into a larger role after the departure of Darius Robinson to the NFL. One of six players left from the 2020 team, Walker had an established voice within the team, unlike [Zion] Young.
Of all the things I’ve enjoyed about watching this team, the growth on the D-Line has to be up towards the top.
- Per Sammy Stava, Mizzou is still in the playoff hunt, technically. He did have a very good Q&A with Gamecocks on SI.
- Rory Whetstone went to the Swim & Dive Press conference so you would know things like this:
You know, a lot of times we talk to athletes about attacking the third quarter of the race doesn’t really apply to 50 free and hardly applies to the 100. But once you start going 200 and above, there’s different race strategies, and we’ve been working on all these details all season long to this point, and now is our opportunity to wear tech suits.
- Over at Rock M+, we had a GAME THREAD for the MVSU game with some lively conversations:
Josh wanted to rip the stanchion down so they would stop the count.
Our Game Threads on the Forums have been a lot of fun. I appreciate the subscribers who jump on and interact. It’s lively!
