Commute: A clearing out of the Special Teams room?

The Morning Commute for Friday December 6th, 2024.

Welcome to the Morning Commute

I don’t know if you knew this or not but the transfer portal is opening soon. Monday, to be exact.

Just because the portal isn’t officially open doesn’t mean recruiting sites can’t report who is planning on entering the moment the season is over. There have already been many reports on many players who ‘plan’ on entering. We’re keeping close track over on the Forums if you’re so inclined to join in.

But while things have mostly been quiet on any players being reported leaving, several Special Teams backups have announced an intention to transfer. For special teams you’re typically looking for a quality long snapper, a good punter, and a place kicker.

Mizzou is losing their punter and long snapper to graduation.

Luke Bauer has been the Tigers’ punter for the past two seasons. Perhaps most memorably throwing a momentum swinging touchdown pass to Marquis Johnson on a punt fake against Kentucky. But not memorably punting the ball 66 times over two years and really being pretty good about it.

Trey Flint has been the long snapper, and again, if you haven’t heard his name a bunch that’s a good sign.

So needing to replace their punter and long snapper it looks like Mizzou will go into the transfer portal! Since backup snapper Jack Kautz announced he was entering the portal, as did backup punters Orion Phillips and Will Safris. Also entering was backup kickers Nick Quadrini, and Brody Boehm.

The expectation seems to, at least for now, that Blake Craig will return for his redshirt sophomore season. And I haven’t seen any evidence that backup long snapper Brett Le Blanc is leaving.

So it would make sense that Missouri is offering punters at least, and also a kicker.

Yesterday at Rock M and Rock M+

Personally, Wease was a part all of the Senior Day traditions on Saturday. He walked during the pre-game festivities honoring the seniors, and after the win, collected a rock from the Block M behind the north end zone and was carried off the field by his teammates. Mizzou fever had seemed to run rampant throughout his system for a long time, but the symptoms appeared to be extra-strong on Saturday.

“I had chills,” Wease said. “It’s the last one. I was just talking to Nate Noel in the locker room. I started getting a little emotional just thinking about it.

“I wouldn’t want to finish my college career nowhere else.”

One thing I think is important to recognize is that yes, in the age of NIL, relationships with players can feel a bit more transactional. But that’s the beauty of sports. Because no matter the influence on finances in some decision making, we’re all still human. We connect, we fall in love. As fans this is common, but it happens to the guys on the team too.

3) 2024 almost game winner vs South Carolina

I’ll contend this would have been #1 had they held on to win. Because it was close to being the single best play I watched all year regardless of the team I cheer for.

If you remove the groups on the floor during the period overlapping halftime, the remaining combinations tended to have scoring margins confined to plus-3 or minus-3. After eight games, Gates’ substitution pattern doesn’t loop back to his starting five. In the Tigers’ loss at Memphis, he was critiqued for not sticking with hot hands. That wasn’t the case on Tuesday.

  • Over at Rock M+, we’re talking about Anthony Robinson, Peyton Marshall, the Verdict, the Transfer Portal, Grill updates, and much more!

Not sure how much Watkins will address this, but what’s notable about Ant from last night wasn’t just his pace in PNRs but his strength. There are some drives where he’s taking on Andrej Stojakovic, who has four inches and 20 pounds on him. On some others, he’s taking some bumps by bigs around the cup but finishing. In our preview, we talked about how Ant could make the simply plays look hard. With another offseason of conditioning work, that issue is resolved.

Still the best basketball coverage around!
