You won’t have to wait long for the game of the day.
Exactly one day after telling everyone how excited I am for basketball season we’re going to show up and watch some football!
I’m not a fan of bye weeks because it disrupts routine, and as an old man I like my routines. I like knowing a game time, planning Saturday around that time, and just planning to be irrationally irate for 3-4 hours. But that day is not this day, this day is bye day.
The good news is there are some really interesting games today, at least as much as a top 5 matchup in the Big 10 can be. It’s the Big 10 so your mileage may vary, but Penn State has been fighting to get past Ohio State and Michigan since James Franklin arrived in Happy Valley since 2014. Franklin is 95-39 at Penn State in his 11 years, he’s won double digit games 5 times but has defeated Ohio State just once. He’s beating Michigan three times, but not in the same year as the Ohio State win which meant Penn State was blocked from reaching the Big 10 championship game and thus blocked from a College Football playoff.
There are many who’ve said the playoff expansion was to get more SEC teams in and maybe that’s partly true. But just as much it’s for schools like Penn State, teams capable of winning 10 or 11 games pretty regularly, but blocked because they can’t beat Ohio State.
After that game the pickings get slim. There’s only one other ranked on ranked matchup and that’s SMU-Pitt. Not exactly marquee, but don’t tell that to Adeen Rao.
If you’re hard up for Mizzou news… enjoy last night’s live RockMRadio broadcast with me, Matt Harris, and Blake Lovell to talk SEC hoops.
And then there’s this:
