The longtime Florida State recruit becomes the 17th commit of Missouri’s 2025 class.

There’s nothing like a signing day surprise. And Drinkwitz sure had a big one in store for us this year.

As the staff looks to lock down the vast majority of the #ZouLive25 crew, Drinkwitz has been hard at work shoring up the class. And nothing adds a little depth and pop like a Top 50 recruit. Enter Javion Hilson.

Hilson, ranked across the board as a highly-rated four star defensive end, only recently reopened his recruitment after his initial school of choice, Florida State, put together one of its worst seasons in history. That opened the door for Drinkwitz, Corey Batoon and Brian Early to get a foot in and bring Hilson to the westernmost parts of the SEC.

I’ve watched a lot of high school tape over the years writing these Mizzou recruiting pieces. And I’ve seen a lot of dominant players stand out against fellow high schoolers on tape.

I can’t recall ever seeing a player with the strength advantage over his peers that Javion Hilson appears to have. The very first thing that happens on every single play? Hilson’s blocker moves about four steps backward almost by default.

It’s hard to look past the physical advantage Hilson has over his peers, but the fine details suggest Mizzou has a future star on their hands. Hilson uses his upper body well to throw smaller defenders off balance, but has enough lower body strength to build up a head of steam in the open field. He’s got enough speed there to keep up with playmakers, though his initial burst could use some work.

Hilson has the athleticism and technique to be a stud sooner rather than later. It’s a big-time get on signing day.
