AP Poll takes pity on Mizzou, gives them the “atta boy” slot at No. 25

The Morning Commute for October 28, 2024.

Welcome to the Morning Commute

Today we’re talking about the polls. Because it’s the bye week and also why in the world would we talk about Saturday?

The Associated Press dropped its latest poll on Saturday and, thankfully, had a little bit of mercy on the poor Mizzou Tigers.

These are the days, huh? When we’re all feeling sad that Mizzou is only ranked No. 25?

Obviously Mizzou got cracked in Tuscaloosa, but it appears that the AP voters are willing to at least consider the circumstances. Like a starting quarterback playing with two out of four healthy appendages. That’ll usually make things difficult against Alabama.

Polls don’t mean anything, obviously, and Mizzou’s chances of grabbing a CFP berth are slim to none at this point. But it’s still nice validation to see the Associated Press giving Mizzou the benefit of the doubt. The Tigers, like it or not pessimists, are a good team that are struggling for form and health at this point. Hopefully another bye week can help some guys rest up before the final push to get to double-digit wins for a second straight year.

Yesterday at Rock M and Rock M+

In which Karen recaps the week that was at Rock M Nation in The Digest:

In the second of Dylan’s women’s basketball pieces this week — read the first one here — he shares some tidbits from media day and we learned that he (or me, really, as I thought the same thing) is not that great at the prediction business, ha!

No one is great at it, Karen!

In which Sam writes about how the bye week is to Mizzou’s benefit:

Missouri has a bye week next week, and that’s the good news. They need it. Let the loss simmer a bit. Get people healthy. Get Cook healthy, hopefully. There are four games left and each is winnable. Maybe this all hasn’t played out like we’d hoped. Missouri doesn’t have to get it all back at once, just go be 1-0 against Oklahoma and take it from there.

Obviously there’s a lot to play for, but man, a win over Oklahoma would make me feel a lot better after the past few weeks.

In which Nathan Hurst gives us a few more spare thoughts from the ‘Bama notebook:

Any questions about whether or not Mizzou looks for a quarterback in the transfer portal following this season are all but answered. Brady Cook has already said this is his last season, whether he could appeal for another year of eligibility or not. In five quarters of SEC play, Drew Pyne has 16/33 for 120 yards, no touchdowns and three interceptions. Incoming freshman phenom Matt Zollers suffered a gruesome leg injury last month, and while he’s expected to fully recover, the chances that he comes in and excels immediately are slim. Rounding out the room next year will be Aiden Glover, who is clearly not ready and Sam Horn is a big question mark as to whether he even plays football again.

Get your QB big boards ready!

In which Quentin writes about how Drew Pyne impacted Mizzou’s strategy in Tuscaloosa:

It was a stark change from something Mizzou had become accustomed to since last season: ball security. Cook set an SEC record last season by throwing 366 straight passes without an interception. Even with MU’s aerial attack taking a step back in 2024, Cook was still doing a phenomenal job keeping the ball out of harm’s way.

Three interceptions won’t cut it, I don’t know how else to say it!

In which Chad gives us his ODD-servations for next week’s games:

11 am (ESPN) – Ole Miss at Arkansas (+6.5 / 57.5 total)

NoW – Two teams here that are a hard to get a handle on. Ole Miss has to win out to have a chance at the playoff, yet their two losses are only by a field goal each. Arkansas has the best win between these two, with their week 6 win over Tennessee. I’d think about backing the ‘Hogs here, but only if you could get 7 or more…

The SEC is really a difficult thing to get a grip on this year.

In which Dylan recaps Mizzou Soccer’s blown opportunity to put themselves in prime position for the SEC Tournament:

With the loss LSU surpasses Mizzou in the standings, pushing Golan’s team to the brink. There remains only one way that Mizzou can reach the SEC tournament despite the loss, as they currently hold the final spot in 12th place.

Yikes!

In which Matthew chronicles the continuation of Mizzou Volleyball’s scorching streak:

Mizzou remains tied for second in the SEC with Kentucky at 6-2 and continues to look better and better. This team likely loses to Oklahoma just a few weeks ago. The key difference?

Defense, defense, defense.

Yay!

In which Rory recaps Mizzou Swim and Dive’s first meet of the season:

“I think we were getting a little beat up on some of our transitions and in some cases, we’re doing better, but I know what we’re capable of,” said Grevers. “I’ve seen what we’ve been doing in practice, and we weren’t quite as sharp as we’re capable of in that specific area.”

Two losses isn’t ideal, but the performances promise better days ahead.

Over at Rock M+, we’re talking about Mizzou basketball’s 90-45 exhibition win over Lincoln on Saturday. As one would expect, there’s plenty of nerdy basketball analysis to go around:

Was going to address this [big man pick-and-roll play] later, but since you asked!

With Gray and Marshall they were playing in shallow drop mostly. With the others it was almost all switching. I didn’t see Burns exposed to it much. Shaw, Mitchell, Pierce, etc were all switching without one of the bigs in.

Basketball season starts one week from today! Very excited about this team’s potential.

The 2024 Season Magazine is available over at Rockm.plus:

The digital magazine is 115 pages chalk full of Mizzou Football previewing, scouting, interviewing, and more…
